Warburton Recreation Reserve is a leafy green reserve space located on the banks of the Yarra River with grand Oak trees, tall Eucalypts and the stunning Yarra Ranges as its backdrop. The site was occupied by a disused swimming pool complex and following a local drive to reactivate the space, Yarra Ranges Coucil undertook to convert the site into a new public park.
The design features a water play and splash park, located over the footprint of the old swimming pool, along with an adventure play space, slide tower, new picnic amenities, courts and an arrival carpark.
The water play space references the local Tree Ferns (Dicksonia antarctica) and the undulating topography, rocks and creek beds found in the nearby hills and features a tower “water dumper” structure built to echo the local railway timber bridge crossing architecture. The timed release of "the dumper" never fails to bring delight to kids adults alike and is the perfect way to cool off in summer.
The result is a significantly upgraded and highly successful public reserve and park which continues to provide a unique offering to locals and attracts visitors to Warburton from across Melbourne and beyond.
