Through 2020/21, New Gisborne Primary School, located in a growing area in Melbourne’s north west, underwent a series of grounds & building improvements which have enhanced the quality of the campus environment for staff and students.
The landscape upgrade works included the creation of 2 new school entrance precincts, connecting gardens and pedestrian links, flexible play spaces, a revitalised play space and sandpit, a new central quadrangle courtyard and an expansive sports field and running track facility.
Underpinning each intervention were core design principles established during the master planning stage which was a collaboration with the co-ordinating Architect, Bryant Alsop. Central to the approach was the principal of “opening up” and reconnecting the various landscape spaces through the careful review of circulation patterns and the development of consistent materials palette and surface treatments.
The new main arrival plaza provides a wide circulation space which unfolds to an adjoining new play ground set within gardens. The space is now refreshed and welcoming, catering for peak pedestrian traffic at school arrival and pick up times whilst providing a contemporary landscape space and flexible seating for waiting parents to gather.
Our role included consultation with the school leadership team, early concept design and master planning through to detailed design and documentation for construction and attendance at site inspections through construction.
